High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Woolooware Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many of our students have high potential and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.

  • Teachers identify students’ learning needs in the classroom and use evidence informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students.
  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk taking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Teachers provide differentiated tasks that adjust pace, complexity and higher order thinking.
  • Our  teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all the students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Across our school

At Woolooware Public School, we believe every student has the capacity to excel when provided with the right opportunities and support. We offer opportunities that are flexible and diverse for students to explore and grow their strengths.

All students, including those identified as high potential and gifted, are encouraged to take on leadership roles within our school such as Student Leaders, House Captains, SRC representatives, Green Team, Care Crew, Warm Welcomers and the Technology Team.

Our Student Leadership Team plays a vital role in school life—running assemblies, welcoming visitors, supporting younger students, and representing Woolooware Public School in Community of Schools leadership initiatives. These experiences build confidence, organisation, teamwork and responsible, inspiring leadership.

Students strengthen their confidence and communication through our debating and public speaking programs, which teach analytical thinking and clear, persuasive expression. They can also extend their interests through writing competitions, Maths Olympiad, By the Sea, Mind Quest, STEM, Chess Club and Night of Notables.

Creative expression is nurtured through whole-school Visual Arts, Drama, Music and Dance programs, with talents showcased in performances, choir and band, and our end-of-year Woolooware’s Got Talent. These opportunities celebrate creativity, build confidence and provide authentic performance experiences.

Our K–6 Wellbeing groups offer a safe, supportive space for students to develop social and emotional skills. Through engaging, age-appropriate activities, students build resilience, learn practical interpersonal skills and develop everyday habits of kindness.

Physical education is also prioritised. Students can participate in representative sport, skill-development programs, gala days, athletics and swimming carnivals, cross-country events and swim scheme programs.

Across NSW

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide programs that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

  • The Premier’s Debating Challenge, representing our school in state-wide competitions that develop critical thinking, persuasive communication, and teamwork skills.
  • The Schools Spectacular is an iconic performing arts event that celebrates the talents, diversity and creativity of students from across NSW public schools.
  • The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
  • The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes our students’ vocabulary development and attention to detail in competitive settings.
